"INCOMING!!!" The artillery shell came roaring in. BOOM! Man that was close. A quarter of a second later and I would have been killed. The trench we had been in was cursed for every company that entered it was dead in 2 days. I got up to a crouched position and dared a look at where the shell had hit seconds before.
"MEDIC!" I screamed, over and over. The ringing from the explosion was still loud in my ears. 3 minutes later, our medic, Dr. Nan, appeared beside me. "Will he be alright?" I asked my voice was hoarse from yelling.
He looked at the figure, then looked at me. "I'm sorry Streak." Was all he said. I tried to stand up, but collapsed

My Knight In Shining Armor
I didn't want to open my eyes, I wanted to spare myself the loneliness. But I did open my eyes, regardless.
I knew what day I had awoken to.
I tucked my wings against my body tightly, and sat patiently on the cliffside, hoping that things would be better for me this year.
Though I knew that it is such a beautiful day, I could not fight off the feeling that an iron fist had closed around my heart.
Was it hatred? Bitterness?
Maybe it was just hopelessness.
I turned my eyes to the sky. It looked as if it was going to rain. I tested the air to confirm that my theory was accurate.

PROLOGUE
A late afternoon Autumn sun sent a beautiful orange glow stretching from horizon to horizon. A light wind blew, sending leaves of magnificent shades of red and gold fluttering gently across the thick grass. Some left the ground and took to the air, floating from where they lay thick in great piles, to the skies around a humble village. Though no great structures had been built, each building from the church to the smallest cottage could give any passerby a feeling of calm and comfort. The village practically sighed as the sun slowly moved downward with each passing hour, and the residents settled in for their late afternoon meals.
